Helping Good People Get Out Of Bad Situations

Success can follow your bankruptcy

Nobody likes losing, and for some people in Mississippi, filing for bankruptcy feels like losing. What you are losing, however, are the stress and anxiety that an overwhelming amount of debt brings. What you are gaining is a fresh start, and everyone deserves a new start. It may help you to know that there are many others in the same boat, including plenty of people that have become successful after a bankruptcy. Here is a lighter look at celebrities who have been where you are now and have come through fine on the other side, as you will too.

Business Insider offers several examples of the rich and famous who have gone from “riches-to-rags” then on to more riches. They include actress Kim Basinger, who filed bankruptcy after being sued by a motion picture company for backing out of a film contract in 1993. She has since gone on to star in many movies and even became a model in 2015 at age 60.

Early in her career, singer Cyndi Lauper filed for bankruptcy in 1981 after four years of singing and writing songs. She kept plugging away, working retail jobs and singing as a geisha in a Japanese restaurant before releasing a hit album, “She’s So Unusual,” in 1983.

Here is a quick look at additional high-profile people who have survived bankruptcies. They have all gone on to have successful careers too:

  • Film director Francis Ford Coppola filed his second bankruptcy in 1992 after a box-office flop
  • Curt Shilling, a former major-league pitcher, filed in 2012 after making a bad investment
  • Radio show host Larry King filed in 1978, the same year CNN hired him for his now-famous talk show
  • Boxer Mike Tyson filed in 2003 following an expensive divorce and owing millions to the IRS

And perhaps the most well-known name on any such list is Donald Trump. According to CNN, the businessman and celebrity TV show host filed four Chapter 11 business bankruptcies, the latest one in 2009. He, of course, went on to become president of the United States, an office he holds today.
